Qatar is an independent, oil-rich Arab emirate in the Middle East with a population of less than 1 million. Much of the country is covered by scrub and desert, while the sparkling, cosmopolitan capital of Doha is an oasis of palm trees, skyscrapers, shopping malls and souqs, luxury hotels and Islamic art museums, a fascinating and heady blend of tradition and modernity.

The 15th Asian Games were held very successfully in Doha in 2006. Recently, Qatar beat out bids from the United States, South Korea, Japan and Australia for the right to host the 2022 World Cup.

These pictures are just a taste of what you can expect to see and do in this little-known but exciting country!
